Australia’s Skilled Migration Point System

In 2013, the Australian government replaced its previous skilled worker program with the General Skilled Migration program, known as Skillselect. The point-based system evaluates applicants’ skills and awards them points based on criteria such as:

  • Age
  • English language proficiency
  • Skilled employment
  • Educational qualification
  • Australian qualifications
  • Regional study
  • Community language skills
  • Spouse/partner skills and qualifications
  • Professional year

Skilled Independent Visa

  •  In order to qualify for this program, you must have at least two years of experience in your nominated occupation.
  • You must score at least 65 points on the Australian points test;
  • You must have enough money to support yourself financially while living in Australia;
  • You must meet health and character requirements


Employer Nomination Scheme

The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) is a permanent work visa that allows employers to sponsor their employees for permanent residence in Australia.

In recent years, the number of ENS visas issued each year has grown significantly.

Under this visa program, workers sponsored by their companies receive permanent work visas.

The employer must also meet certain requirements and obligations before applying for an ENS visa.

Who is eligible?

  • To be eligible for an ENS visa, you must: be nominated by an approved organization
  • have been offered a position within their organization
  • be under 45 years of age on the date that you apply for your visa; and
  • have at least three years of relevant experience in a skilled occupation
  • meet all health and character requirements; and
  • meet English language proficiency requirements


TSS Visa (Temporary Skill Shortage)

The TSS Visa (Temporary Skill Shortage) is a temporary work visa that allows employers to hire skilled workers from overseas. This visa is valid for up to four years, depending on the employee’s requirement.

This visa is for people who have a specific skill that has been identified as being in short supply in Australia. This visa is available for positions that are on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). You will need to have at least two years of work experience in your nominated occupation.

The TSS Visa (Temporary Skill Shortage) is a temporary work visa that allows employers to hire skilled workers from overseas. This visa is valid for up to four years, depending on the employee’s requirement.

Under this visa, the applicant can work for two to four years depending on the requirement of employers.  Applicants for this visa must have a minimum of two years’ work experience and be under 45 years of age. Companies hiring employees on this visa will be required to pay them the market salary.
