Canada National Occupational Code (NOC)

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) list of Canada is a comprehensive framework used by the Canadian government to categorize and classify all occupations in the Canadian labour market.

Each occupation on the NOC list is assigned a four-digit code that identifies its skill level, as well as a job title and a brief description of the duties and responsibilities associated with the occupation.

The NOC list is used by the Canadian government to gather data on the labour market, support immigration programs, and to develop policies and programs related to education, training, and employment. It is also used by employers and job seekers to identify the skills and qualifications required for specific occupations.

On November 16, 2022, Canada switched to the 2021 version of the NOC. This means that the NOC system used in Canada was updated to reflect the latest changes in the labour market and the nature of work.

The 2021 version of the NOC includes several changes, including the addition of new occupations and the modification of existing occupations to reflect changes in job duties and requirements. The 2021 version of the NOC also includes a new classification system for management occupations, which is designed to reflect the different levels of responsibility and complexity associated with different management roles.

To be eligible for Express Entry, an applicant must have at least one year of skilled work experience in one of the NOC 2021 TEER categories.

The TEER subcategories are as follows:

  1. TEER 0: This subcategory includes managerial occupations, which require a high level of leadership, decision-making, and strategic planning skills. Examples of occupations in this category include CEOs, executives, and directors.
  2. TEER 1: This subcategory includes professional occupations that usually require a degree from a university. Examples of occupations in this category include doctors, lawyers, and engineers.
  3. TEER 2: This subcategory includes technical and skilled trades occupations that usually require a college diploma or apprenticeship training. Examples of occupations in this category include electricians, plumbers, and mechanics.
  4. TEER 3: This subcategory includes intermediate-level occupations that require some post-secondary education or on-the-job training. Examples of occupations in this category include administrative assistants, sales representatives, and chefs.
  5. TEER 4: This subcategory includes entry-level occupations that require little or no post-secondary education or training. Examples of occupations in this category include food and beverage servers, retail salespersons, and cleaners.
  6. TEER 5: These are typically low-skill occupations that involve manual labour or routine tasks that can be learned on the job. Examples of occupations in this category include construction laborers, cleaners, and farm workers.
